Should You Use a Washcloth When Showering?
Excessive scrubbing during bathing is, of course, something we noticed over a decade ago when some adults developed molluscum contagiosum on their bodies. Upon investigation, we found that all cases involved the use of bath scrubbing mitts.
However, this phenomenon has become less common in recent years, but we still don't recommend it - using fibrous bath towels can excessively damage the stratum corneum.
When using a towel, if you gently rub your skin, you can actually remove some dark-colored residue, which we commonly call "dirt." However, if you use a loofah or exfoliating towel, it can cause excessive damage to the stratum corneum.
I’m not sure how common it is now, but in the past, we used to see cases where overuse of loofahs or harsh exfoliation could lead to a condition called molluscum contagiosum. That’s why we don’t recommend scrubbing too hard with a loofah.
